Home security has split into two clear camps over the past few years: DIY kits you can install in an afternoon, and professionally monitored systems with a 24/7 control center on the other end of the line. Both work — picking the right one comes down to how you respond to alarms.
DIY makes sense when
- You’re comfortable handling alerts yourself (the app pings you, you decide what to do).
- Monthly fees are a deal-breaker — most DIY systems are free to operate after the upfront purchase.
- You rent and need to take the system with you when you move.
Pro monitoring is worth it when
You travel often, live alone, or simply prefer that someone else makes the “is this serious enough to call the police?” judgment call at 3 a.m. Insurance discounts on monitored systems can also offset much of the monthly fee — worth checking with your provider before deciding.
Whichever route you choose, prioritize sensors over cameras. A door contact and a motion detector cover the entry points an intruder actually uses; pretty 4K footage of an empty hallway after the fact is rarely the deciding factor.
